6.1.8 Discuss the advantages of producing a dedicated operating system for a device
Advantages
• Security: A dedicated operating system ensures a higher level of security.
– Example: Apple with IOS being one of the most secure phone OS out there.
• Customisability: Dedicated operating systems custom made to do a specific function at maximum efficiency.
– Example: Rasbian for the Raspberry Pi has a lot of customisability options.
• Modify priorities: can make running some devices easier to use or better suited to their audience. By having a custom OS you can eliminate certain aspects of the OS which are not needed, reducing the size of the OS, therefore reducing the amount of secondary memory and RAM being used
– Example: Raspberry Pi options can be used to disable some OS heavy using apps and programs.
• Speed: The OS is specifically made for the phone or computer, meaning that it is faster than universal OS's.
– Example: Apple OS works faster on Apple computers than Windows does.
• Bugs and Glitches: Due to more fine tuning, the product has less bugs and glitches
– Example: Apple OS is more reliable than Windows.
